John Hackett - Velvet Afternoon

John Hackett Last year I heard about a CD from local resident and flute teacher John Hackett featuring his own compositions played on flute and piano. I had a listen to the CD and decided it was well worth stocking.
The various flute pieces on this CD have been written over the past twenty years. One of them was used as the theme music for a BBC Radio 4 programme called Just Three Wishes Imagine swinging dreamily in a hammock on a sunny afternoon with a chilled drink nearby and you get the general picture.
Priced at a modest £9-99, this is well worth exploring.

Bach and Beyond

Three Centuries of Organ Chorales

This is a CD played by Andrew Linn on the Goetze and Gwynn Organ at St Matthew’s, Carver Street, Sheffield

As well as Andrew Linn the CD also features Viva Voce, of whom good things have been heard according to someone who attended a recent concert.

Much of the music on the CD is by Bach, either his own compositions or else his harmonisations.
The disc also includes the final work by Johannes Brahms O World, I must leave thee one of a set of 11 Chorale Preludes.

Henrik Linnemann

I've known Henrik for a few years and had heard that he'd made a CD - "Journeys from Nether Edge" - a collection of Jazz pieces inspired by scenes in Sheffield and the surrounding area. It's not necessary to know Sheffield to enjoy this CD.

Currently out of stock, but I am awaiting new pressings.

Great European Organs No 56 -
Sheffield City Hall

The organ of Sheffield City Hall played by John Scott Whiteley
If you're anxiously anticipating the opening of the City Hall after its £12.5 million refurbishment and are finding the waiting too much, then you may like to know that there is a recording on the Priory label which features the organ of Sheffield City Hall.
Those who know about such matters will be able to say that the organ is a Henry Willis III. Others may recall that when it was installed, it cost something like £12,000 and today is valued at £1 million.
Some of the music on the CD may be familiar to organist, but for the most part these pieces are all lesser known pieces waiting for the listener to discover. Of particular interest is the Prelude in C written by E.C. Bairstow which was played at the inauguration of the organ back in the 1930's. The CD also includes a March in D which would make a splendid recessional for a wedding.
