"Classical music is such an integral part of European culture that it should be regarded as a thing available to all by right. No longer does it alone occupy central attention in our musical world; many other kinds of music are, quite rightly, up there with it. I pointed out that the masterpieces of classical music are the sound equivalents of the great cathedrals, and I trust nobody is thinking of leaving them to rot..."

There is also the feature of works to be performed listed by composer which has been useful in the past.
One feature "new" this year is the archive of the composer page, showing the past two seasons.
Certain concerts stand out as being of special interest. As these draw near, I am highlighting them. Details of the first of these can be found at Connoisseur's Choice Concerts. These may be selected because of the performers or the repertoire.

Sleeper

A question for you. Which of the local orchestras has a published author amongst its ranks?
Give up?
The answer is the Hallam Sinfonia and the author is Paul Adam. One of his novels, Sleeper would be of interest to music lovers who like a good thriller. You can find out more here.

Sheffield Gramophone Society

Download details of the new series here . Topics to be covered include Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Havergal Brian, Purcell, and an obituary for the musicassette. Early on (1st October) there will be a talk on Szymanowski and there was an opportunity to hear that composer's music in the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra's February concert.

Resources

I've a small list of resources which may be of use to people needing a piano tuner, bow repairs or music lessons.

Local History

Since 2007 is the 150th Anniversary both of the birth of Elgar and the founding of Sheffield FC, I am marking this occasion by posting an historical photograph from Sheffield FC's history; the first goal scored at the Coach and Horses ground.
