Natalia Luis-Bassa will take up her appointment as Music Director in January 2008, and will conduct the final two concerts of this season, and conducting three concerts in future seasons.
Richard Laing and Mark Heron have been appointed Guest Conductors, and will be invited to conduct the Hallam Sinfonia on a regular basis.
Richard Laing opens this season with a concert on Saturday 13th October in Firth Hall, including Dvorak’s New World Symphony, and Mozart’s well-known 4th Horn Concerto with Anthony Halstead as soloist.
Mark Heron will conduct the concert on Saturday 24th November – a Beethoven evening – the 5th Symphony and 5th Piano Concerto, when we welcome back Ashley Wass a soloist. The programme also includes a piece by the composer Stephen McNeff – Heiligenstadt, which was written as a companion piece to Beethoven Symphony No.5. As well as her work with the Hallam Sinfonia, Natalia Luis-Bassa is Principal Conductor of the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra and Musical Director of the Haffner Orchestra in Lancaster.
Natalia is currently studying her Master's Degree at The University of Huddersfield and has recently been awarded the Elgar Society Prize for the performance of Elgar’s Second Symphony with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra. Last summer Natalia visited her native Venezuela to perform Elgar's masterpiece with the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, receiving excellent reviews from the audience and critics.
Since winning the second prize at the Maazel-Vilar Conductor’s Competition in New York in 2002, she has worked both in the UK and abroad with orchestras including the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela, Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela, Orquesta Filarmónica Nacional, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Paragon Ensemble, Bombay Chamber Orchestra and Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra.
The Venezuelan conductor began her musical studies at the age of 15, where she studied Oboe at the world famous Orquesta Juvenil de Venezuela. She read music at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales, where she was appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Falcón. She completed her studies at the Royal College of Music, London and held the RCM Junior Fellowship in Opera Conducting for two years.
